How UAE Visa Overstay Fines Work in 2026
The United Arab Emirates introduced a unified visa overstay penalty system effective February 11, 2026. Under the new rules, all visa holders who remain in the country beyond their permitted stay are subject to a flat fine of AED 50 per day, regardless of visa type. This replaces the previous tiered system where fines varied based on visa category and could accumulate rapidly. The new system applies to all visa categories including tourist visas, visit visas, residence permits, and cancelled residence visas. Fines begin accumulating the day after the visa expires (or after any applicable grace period). There are no escalating penalties or additional administrative fees beyond the daily rate and any applicable exit permit costs.
Grace Periods by Visa Type
Grace periods vary depending on the type of visa held. Tourist and visit visa holders receive no grace period — fines begin the day after expiry. Holders of cancelled residence visas may receive a grace period of 30 to 180 days depending on their skill level and employment category. During the grace period, no overstay fines are charged, giving the individual time to either find a new sponsor, change visa status, or exit the country.
Expired residence visa holders who have not formally cancelled their permit should contact the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA) immediately. The grace period for these cases is determined on a case-by-case basis. It is advisable to consult with a typing centre or immigration consultant to confirm your specific grace period before it expires.
How to Pay Your Overstay Fine
UAE visa overstay fines can be paid through several official channels. The ICP Smart Services portal and mobile app allow online payment with a credit or debit card. GDRFA Dubai service centres accept walk-in payments. The UAE Pass app provides a convenient way to settle fines from your phone. Typing centres across the UAE can also process payments on your behalf. If you have overstayed for more than 30 days, you will need an exit permit (costing approximately AED 250-300) in addition to the accumulated daily fines.
