How the Plain English Rewriter Works
This tool uses Chrome's built-in Rewriter API to transform complex text into clear, everyday English. The AI preserves the original meaning while replacing jargon, simplifying sentence structure, and making content accessible to a wider audience. When Chrome AI is unavailable, the tool calculates a Flesch-Kincaid readability score and provides specific tips for simplifying the text. It identifies long sentences, complex words with four or more syllables, passive voice constructions, and common jargon that can be replaced with simpler alternatives.
What Gets Simplified in Your Text
The rewriter targets the most common readability barriers. Legal jargon like "hereinafter," "notwithstanding," and "pursuant to" gets replaced with plain equivalents like "from now on," "despite," and "under." Technical terms are swapped for everyday words where possible without losing accuracy. Long sentences exceeding 20 words are broken into shorter, clearer statements. Passive voice constructions are converted to active voice for directness. These changes can drop a document from graduate-level reading difficulty to an accessible 8th-grade level that most audiences can understand easily.
Private Text Simplification
Whether you are simplifying legal contracts, medical documents, insurance policies, or technical manuals, your text never leaves your browser. Chrome runs the Gemini Nano AI model directly on your hardware for complete privacy. The readability analysis fallback also runs entirely in JavaScript. This makes the tool safe for processing confidential legal agreements, proprietary technical documentation, and sensitive personal documents without any data leaving your device.
