How the Subclass 189 Points Test Works

The Skilled Independent visa (Subclass 189) is part of Australia's points-tested migration system, but unlike Subclass 190 and Subclass 491 it does not include state or regional nomination points. Your score is built from age, English level, work experience, qualifications, and certain bonus factors such as Australian study, community language, or partner skills. This page narrows the calculation to the 189 pathway so you can see what your independent score looks like without nomination boosts.

Home Affairs requires you to submit an Expression of Interest before you can be invited to apply. The official threshold is 65 points, but meeting 65 does not guarantee an invitation. In practice, invitation strength depends on occupation demand, round size, and how many higher-scoring candidates are ahead of you. This calculator therefore shows both a threshold result and a rough competitiveness read, so you can tell the difference between "EOI-eligible" and "realistically competitive".

What This 189 Calculator Checks

This tool does two things. First, it totals your estimated 189 points using the core categories people usually need when planning an EOI. Second, it flags three practical blockers that often matter before lodgement: whether your occupation is on the relevant list, whether you have a suitable skills assessment, and whether your English is at least at the competent level. That makes it more targeted than a broad PR score page.

Because Home Affairs changed approved English test settings on 7 August 2025, this page asks you to choose your English points category directly instead of assuming a score conversion table. If you need help mapping IELTS, PTE, TOEFL, or another approved test to the correct band, use the related English tools below and then confirm the exact category against current Home Affairs guidance.

Quick 189 Read

  • Below 65 points: You do not meet the basic points threshold for a Subclass 189 EOI.
  • 65 to 74 points: Threshold met, but invitation strength is usually weak for many occupations.
  • 75 to 84 points: More competitive, but still occupation-dependent.
  • 85 to 94 points: Strong profile for many invitation scenarios.
  • 95+ points: Very strong profile, though invitation timing still depends on current rounds.

How to Improve a Weak 189 Score

If your score is not where you want it, the fastest levers are usually English level and partner strategy. Moving from competent to proficient English adds 10 points, and moving from proficient to superior adds another 10. If your partner qualifies for partner skills points, that can materially change your result. Australian work experience, Professional Year completion, and NAATI community language points can also move a borderline profile into a stronger invitation range.

If your score is still weak after that, the right next step may not be Subclass 189 at all. A state-nominated or regional route can change the picture significantly. That is why this page links back to the general Australia PR points calculator, where you can compare 189 with 190 and 491 instead of forcing every case into the independent pathway.
