Semester-wise GPA
Bangladesh University CGPA System
Bangladesh universities use a 4-point grading scale for undergraduate and postgraduate programs. The Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) is calculated from all semesters combined, weighted by credit hours. This calculator supports the standard grading system used by National University, University of Dhaka, University of Chittagong, and private universities across Bangladesh.
4-Point Grading Scale
The standard grading scale assigns letter grades with corresponding grade points: A+ (4.00), A (3.75), A- (3.50), B+ (3.25), B (3.00), B- (2.75), C+ (2.50), C (2.25), D (2.00), and F (0.00). Some universities may have slight variations, but this scale is the most widely used. The minimum passing grade is typically D (2.00) for pass courses and C (2.25) for honors courses.
CGPA Calculation Formula
Semester GPA = Sum of (Grade Point x Credit Hours) / Total Credit Hours
CGPA = Sum of (all course Grade Points x Credit Hours) / Total Credit Hours across all semesters
CGPA Requirements for Jobs
Government BCS exams require a minimum CGPA of 2.50 for most cadres. Bangladesh Bank and other government institutions typically require 2.50-3.00 CGPA. Private sector banks and multinational companies prefer candidates with CGPA 3.00 or above. For academic positions, a CGPA of 3.50 or higher is generally expected.
Honors vs Pass Course CGPA
In the National University system, Honors courses require a minimum GPA of 2.25 per course to earn credit. Pass courses require a minimum of 2.00. If you score below the minimum, you must retake the course. Your CGPA includes all attempted courses unless a retake replaces the original grade, depending on university policy.
How to Improve Your CGPA
Focus on high-credit courses as they have the most impact on your CGPA. A 4-credit course affects your CGPA twice as much as a 2-credit course. If your university allows course retakes, prioritize retaking courses where you received D or C grades. Consistent performance across all semesters is better than having one good and one bad semester.
CGPA to Percentage Conversion
Some employers and foreign universities require percentage equivalents. A common conversion used in Bangladesh is: Percentage = CGPA x 25. So a CGPA of 3.50 = 87.5%. Another formula is: Percentage = (CGPA - 0.75) x 100 / 3.25. Always check the specific conversion formula required by the institution you are applying to.
