How the CQC Readiness Quiz Works

The CQC Readiness Quiz is a free interactive assessment that tests whether your UK care home is prepared for a Care Quality Commission inspection. It presents 15 Yes/No questions, three for each of the CQC's five key questions: Safe, Effective, Caring, Responsive, and Well-led. Each Yes answer scores one point. Your total score out of 15 determines your overall readiness rating, and each key area receives its own score so you can see exactly where gaps exist. The quiz is based on the CQC Single Assessment Framework and the 34 quality statements introduced in 2023.

The New CQC Single Assessment Framework

In November 2023, CQC launched the Single Assessment Framework replacing the previous Key Lines of Enquiry. The new framework uses 34 quality statements organised under the same 5 key questions. It introduces 6 evidence categories that inspectors use to gather information: people's experience, feedback from staff, feedback from partners, observation, processes, and outcomes. The framework places greater emphasis on continuous monitoring rather than periodic inspections. CQC now uses a wider range of evidence sources including data from other regulators, local authority intelligence, and public feedback. Care homes must demonstrate ongoing compliance rather than preparing only when an inspection is announced.

    What Each Key Area Covers

Safe covers medication management, infection prevention, incident reporting, safeguarding, risk assessments, and safe staffing levels. Effective includes care planning, nutrition monitoring, Mental Capacity Act compliance, staff training, and outcome measurement. Caring focuses on dignity, privacy, person-centred interactions, communication with families, and meaningful activity provision. Responsive examines complaints handling, end-of-life care planning, accessibility, personalisation, and adaptation to changing needs. Well-led assesses governance structures, staff supervision, duty of candour, quality improvement programmes, and regulatory compliance. Understanding what each area requires helps you prepare evidence systematically rather than scrambling when inspectors arrive.

How to Use Your Quiz Results

Focus first on any key area where you scored zero or one out of three, as these represent your highest risk domains. For each failed question, create a specific action plan with a responsible person and deadline. Use the CQC Inspection Checklist tool to build a detailed evidence map for each area. Reassess monthly by retaking this quiz to track improvement over time. Share your results with your management team to align governance priorities. Remember that CQC inspections can happen at any time, so continuous readiness is more effective than pre-inspection preparation. Digital tools like AlwaysReady Care can automate evidence collection and provide real-time compliance dashboards.
