How Does the VPN Speed Test Work?

This speed test measures three key metrics of your internet connection. Download speed is measured by fetching a known file from a CDN multiple times and calculating the transfer rate. Latency is measured by timing round-trip requests to DNS resolvers. Jitter is calculated from the variation between latency measurements. These are the same metrics that affect your VPN experience.

What Each Metric Means

  • Download Speed (Mbps) — How fast data travels to your device. Higher is better. VPNs typically reduce speed by 10-30% due to encryption overhead and routing.
  • Latency (ms) — The time for a round-trip request. Lower is better. VPNs add latency because traffic routes through the VPN server. Under 50ms is excellent, 50-100ms is good, over 100ms may feel slow.
  • Jitter (ms) — Variation in latency between requests. Lower is better. High jitter causes stuttering in video calls and gaming. Under 10ms is excellent, 10-30ms is acceptable.
