How the EU Return Deadline Calculator Works

Under EU consumer protection law, specifically the Consumer Rights Directive 2011/83/EU, consumers who purchase goods or services through distance selling channels have a right to withdraw from the contract within 14 calendar days without giving any reason and without incurring any costs beyond the direct cost of returning the goods. This is commonly known as the cooling-off period or right of withdrawal. The 14-day period begins the day after you receive the physical goods (for product purchases) or the day after the contract is concluded (for services and digital content). This calculator computes the exact deadline based on your delivery date and tells you how many days remain.

The cooling-off period applies to purchases made online through websites or apps, orders placed by telephone, purchases made through mail-order catalogues, products bought from door-to-door salespeople, and goods purchased at a distance selling event or presentation away from the seller's usual business premises. The right applies regardless of the value of the purchase and regardless of whether you have opened the packaging, although the goods must be returned in a condition that allows the seller to resell them. Some categories of goods are exempt from the cooling-off period, including perishable goods, custom-made or personalized products, sealed audio/video recordings or software that has been unsealed, newspapers and magazines, and goods that deteriorate rapidly.

To exercise your right of withdrawal, you must inform the seller of your decision before the 14-day deadline expires. This can be done by sending a clear statement (letter, fax, or email) expressing your decision to withdraw. You do not need to use a specific form, although the seller may provide a model withdrawal form. Once you have notified the seller, you have an additional 14 days to physically return the goods. The seller must refund all payments received, including the original delivery costs (for standard delivery), within 14 days of being informed of the withdrawal. The seller may withhold the refund until they have received the goods back or until you provide evidence of having sent them back, whichever is earlier.

There is an important protection for consumers in cases where the seller fails to properly inform you about your right of withdrawal. If the seller did not provide the required information about the cooling-off period before you made the purchase, the withdrawal period is extended to 12 months from the end of the original 14-day period, giving you a total of 12 months and 14 days. This is a powerful incentive for sellers to comply with their information obligations. If you believe you were not properly informed of your cancellation rights, you may have a significantly longer window to return the product. This calculator focuses on the standard 14-day period, but keep this extended right in mind if the seller was not transparent about the return policy.
