How the Age Calculator Works

This age calculator determines the exact time elapsed between your date of birth and a target date (today by default). It breaks down the result into years, months, days, hours, and minutes, giving you a complete picture of your age. Unlike simple year-subtraction calculators, this tool accounts for varying month lengths, leap years, and the exact day-to-day difference to produce an accurate result.

The calculation follows the same logic as how people naturally count age: full years first, then remaining months, then remaining days. For example, someone born on March 15, 1990 would be 36 years, 0 months, and 1 day old on March 16, 2026. The calculator also converts your total age into weeks, days, hours, and minutes for a more granular view.

Age Calculation Method

Age = Target Date − Date of Birth

Total Days = (Target Date in ms − Birth Date in ms) / 86,400,000

Total Weeks = Total Days / 7

Total Hours = Total Days × 24

Total Minutes = Total Hours × 60

Where:

  • Date of Birth = Your birth date (day, month, year)
  • Target Date = The date you want to calculate your age on (defaults to today)
  • Leap years are automatically accounted for in the calculation

Why Knowing Your Exact Age Matters

Knowing your precise age is important for a variety of legal, financial, and personal reasons. Many government services, insurance policies, retirement plans, and legal documents require your exact age in years, months, and days. Age eligibility for voting, driving, drinking, retirement benefits, and social security all depend on precise date calculations. Even seemingly simple questions like "Am I old enough to apply?" or "When do I turn 65?" require accurate age computation that accounts for leap years and month-length differences.

Example Calculations

Example 1: Born January 15, 1990 (calculated on March 16, 2026)

  • Age: 36 years, 2 months, 1 day
  • Total Days: 13,209 days
  • Total Weeks: 1,887 weeks
  • Total Hours: 317,016 hours
  • Total Minutes: 19,020,960 minutes

Example 2: Born July 4, 2000 (calculated on March 16, 2026)

  • Age: 25 years, 8 months, 12 days
  • Total Days: 9,386 days
  • Total Weeks: 1,340 weeks
  • Total Hours: 225,264 hours
  • Total Minutes: 13,515,840 minutes

Example 3: Born February 29, 2000 (Leap Day Baby)

People born on February 29 only have a birthday every 4 years. In non-leap years, their birthday is typically celebrated on February 28 or March 1. This calculator handles leap year births correctly by counting the exact number of days elapsed.

  • On March 16, 2026: 26 years, 0 months, 15 days
  • Next actual birthday (Feb 29): 2028

Age for Legal and Financial Purposes

Different countries and institutions define age differently for legal purposes. In most Western countries, you are considered a certain age on your birthday. However, in some East Asian traditions (such as the Korean age system), a person is considered 1 year old at birth and gains a year every New Year's Day. For legal and financial documents, always use the standard chronological age as calculated by this tool, unless your jurisdiction specifies otherwise.

Common Age-Related Milestones

People often want to know their exact age for milestone tracking. Common milestones include turning 18 (legal adulthood in many countries), 21 (drinking age in the US), 25 (car insurance rates often drop), 30, 40, 50, 59.5 (US retirement account penalty-free withdrawals), 62 (early Social Security eligibility in the US), 65 (Medicare eligibility), and 67 (full Social Security retirement age for many). This calculator can help you determine exactly when you will reach these milestones by setting the target date to your upcoming birthday.

Age Difference Calculator

You can also use this tool to calculate the age difference between two people. Simply enter one person's date of birth and use the other person's birthday as the target date. The result shows the exact difference in years, months, and days between the two dates.
