How the Final Grade Calculator Works

This calculator uses the weighted average formula to determine the minimum score you need on your final exam. You provide three inputs: your current grade before the final, the weight of the final exam as a percentage of your total grade, and the overall grade you want to achieve. The calculator then solves for the required final exam score.

This is the inverse of a normal grade calculation. Instead of computing your overall grade from known scores, it works backward from your target grade to tell you what you need to score on the remaining assessment.

Required Final Exam Grade Formula

Required Final Grade = (Target Grade − Current Grade × (1 − Final Weight)) / Final Weight

Where:

  • Target Grade = The overall class grade you want (e.g., 90% for an A-)
  • Current Grade = Your grade so far before the final exam
  • Final Weight = What percentage the final exam is worth (as a decimal, e.g., 0.40 for 40%)

Example Calculations

Example 1: Need a B (83%) Overall

Current grade: 88%, Final weight: 30%, Target: 83%

  • Required = (83 − 88 × 0.70) / 0.30
  • Required = (83 − 61.6) / 0.30
  • Required = 21.4 / 0.30 = 71.3%

You need at least a 71.3% on the final to get a B overall.

Example 2: Need an A (93%) Overall

Current grade: 91%, Final weight: 40%, Target: 93%

  • Required = (93 − 91 × 0.60) / 0.40
  • Required = (93 − 54.6) / 0.40
  • Required = 38.4 / 0.40 = 96.0%

You need a 96% on the final to get an A overall.

Example 3: Impossible Scenario

Current grade: 65%, Final weight: 20%, Target: 90%

  • Required = (90 − 65 × 0.80) / 0.20
  • Required = (90 − 52) / 0.20 = 190%

This is impossible — you'd need more than 100%. The calculator will tell you if your target is unreachable.

Study Strategy Based on Your Results

If the required grade is below 70%, you're in good shape — focus on understanding the material thoroughly. If it's between 70% and 90%, you need solid preparation. If it's above 90%, you'll need exceptional performance. And if it's above 100%, the target isn't achievable with just the final — consider whether extra credit or other adjustments are available.

Multiple Scenarios at Once

Use this calculator multiple times with different target grades to see your full range of possibilities. Check what you need for an A, B, and C to understand your options and make a realistic study plan.
