Grade Calculator
Calculate your weighted or unweighted class grade from assignments, exams, quizzes, and projects. Add as many categories as you need. Runs in your browser — no data is sent anywhere.
How the Grade Calculator Works
This grade calculator computes your overall class grade based on the categories you define and their respective weights. Each category (such as homework, quizzes, midterms, finals, or projects) has a weight that represents what percentage of your final grade it contributes. You enter the grade you received in each category, and the calculator computes the weighted average to give you your overall class grade.
If all your weights add up to 100%, the calculator gives you a straightforward weighted average. If weights do not add up to 100%, the calculator normalizes them proportionally so you can still get an accurate result. This is useful when you only have partial grades and want to estimate your current standing.
Weighted Grade Formula
Overall Grade = (W₁ × G₁ + W₂ × G₂ + ... + Wₙ × Gₙ) / (W₁ + W₂ + ... + Wₙ)
Where:
- W = Weight of each category (as a percentage)
- G = Grade received in each category (as a percentage)
- n = Number of categories
Understanding Weighted Grades
Weighted grades give different importance to different types of work. A final exam worth 40% of your grade has a much larger impact than homework worth 10%. This system reflects the relative importance of each assessment type in measuring your understanding of the course material. Understanding how weights work helps you prioritize your study time and focus on the categories that have the biggest impact on your final grade.
Example Calculations
Example 1: Standard Weighted Grade
- Homework: weight 20%, grade 95%
- Quizzes: weight 15%, grade 88%
- Midterm: weight 25%, grade 78%
- Final Exam: weight 40%, grade 82%
Overall = (20×95 + 15×88 + 25×78 + 40×82) / (20+15+25+40) = (1900 + 1320 + 1950 + 3280) / 100 = 84.5% (B)
Example 2: Partial Grades (Weights Don't Add to 100%)
If you've only completed homework and the midterm so far:
- Homework: weight 20%, grade 92%
- Midterm: weight 25%, grade 85%
Overall = (20×92 + 25×85) / (20+25) = (1840 + 2125) / 45 = 88.1% (B+)
This tells you your current standing based on completed work.
Letter Grade Scale
This calculator uses the standard US letter grade scale. Different schools and countries may use different scales, but the most common mapping is: A+ (97-100), A (93-96), A- (90-92), B+ (87-89), B (83-86), B- (80-82), C+ (77-79), C (73-76), C- (70-72), D+ (67-69), D (63-66), D- (60-62), F (below 60). Check your school's specific grading policy if it differs from this standard scale.
Tips for Improving Your Grade
Use this calculator strategically: enter your current grades and then try different scenarios for upcoming assignments to see what scores you need to achieve your target grade. For example, if you need a B (83%) overall and you know your current standing, you can work backward to find the minimum score needed on your final exam. This kind of planning helps you study smarter, not just harder.
