What Happened Today in History

This tool uses the Wikipedia On This Day REST API to surface curated historical events, notable births, and deaths for any date you choose. The Wikipedia On This Day feature is maintained by a global community of editors who review and select the most historically significant events for each calendar date. Data covers thousands of years of recorded history, from ancient civilisations to events in the current century. This tool auto-loads today's date and updates automatically each day.

How to Use the History Browser

By default, the tool shows today's date in UTC. Use the date picker to navigate to any month and day of the year — the year component is not used since historical events span all years for any given date. The Events tab shows major world history events with Wikipedia links for deeper reading. The Births tab shows notable people born on that date, including their birth and death years and a brief description. The Deaths tab shows notable figures who died on that date. Use the era filter buttons to narrow events to a specific historical period: Ancient (before 500 CE), Medieval (500–1499), Modern (1500–1899), 20th Century, or 21st Century. Toggle Compact view to see a condensed two-line summary of each event for quick browsing.

Day of the Year Fact

Each date shows a "day of year" fact — for example, March 29 is day 88 of the year in a standard year, with 277 days remaining. Knowing where a date falls in the year is useful for project planning, seasonal awareness, and understanding how much of the year has passed. The calculation automatically accounts for leap years when relevant. The number at the top of the tool gives you an instant sense of the date's position in the annual calendar without any calculation required.

Sharing Historical Facts

Click the share button next to any event to copy it to your clipboard. The copied text includes the year, a description of the event, and a link to this tool — ready to paste into a message, email, social media post, or chat. History sharing is particularly popular in schools, trivia groups, and on social media around significant anniversaries. You can also combine this tool with the Trivia Quiz Generator to create history-themed quiz questions based on today's events.
