How the Trivia Quiz Generator Works
This tool fetches questions from the Open Trivia Database, a free, community-contributed trivia database with thousands of verified questions across 24 categories. Questions are encoded in HTML to handle special characters and are decoded automatically before display. Each quiz session fetches a fresh, randomised selection of questions matching your chosen category, difficulty, and quantity — ensuring every quiz is different. The multiple-choice options are shuffled on each question to prevent memorisation of answer positions. Based on 2026 community data, OpenTDB serves over 5 million trivia requests per month.
Quiz Difficulty Levels and Scoring
Choose from Easy, Medium, or Hard questions, or select "Any" to get a mixed difficulty quiz. Easy questions are suitable for general audiences and younger players. Medium questions cover intermediate knowledge across the selected category. Hard questions challenge even subject matter experts. Your score is calculated as the number of correct answers out of the total, displayed as both a fraction and a percentage. Letter grades are assigned as follows: A (90% or above), B (75% or above), C (60% or above), D (50% or above), and F (below 50%). Your high score for each category is saved locally in your browser so you can track improvement over time.
Tips for High Scores
Start with "Any" difficulty on a category you enjoy to warm up and establish your baseline score. Use the 15-second timer mode for an added challenge once you're comfortable with a category. Science and Nature, Geography, and History categories tend to have the most questions available, giving you greater variety across multiple quiz sessions. General Knowledge is the best category for mixed groups or parties as it doesn't require specialist knowledge. Share your scores to challenge friends — competitive quizzing is consistently rated as one of the most engaging learning formats by educational researchers.
Using Trivia Quizzes for Learning
Spaced repetition through quizzes is one of the most effective study methods supported by cognitive science research. Taking a trivia quiz on a subject activates recall practice — the process of retrieving information from memory — which strengthens neural pathways more effectively than passive reading. Use this tool to test knowledge before exams, to refresh on topics you haven't studied recently, or simply to keep your mind sharp. The wide range of categories makes it suitable for students, teachers, trivia night hosts, and casual learners alike.
