Moon Lander Game
Thrust, tilt, touch down. A lunar lander game with real gravity — the Moon at one-sixth g, then a drone ship at sea in a crosswind — free in your browser, retro green screen or modern, no download and no sign-up.
Moon Lander
Hold to burn, lean to steer.
Hold BURN or the screen to fire the engine. ◀ ▶ lean; let go and it levels itself. Keys: space/↑ burn, ← → lean, P pause.
What Is a Lunar Lander Game — Free Online, No Download
A lunar lander game puts you in a rocket falling toward a pad with one engine, a little fuel, and gravity doing the rest. Fire the engine too late and you hit hard; fire it too early and you run dry and fall anyway. The whole game is judging that one burn. This moon lander game plays free in your browser: nothing to download, no account, and it keeps working offline once the page has loaded. It is the same idea that has been on arcade cabinets, calculators and school computers since the 1970s, rebuilt for a phone screen.
How to Play the Moon Lander Game in Your Browser
- Burn — hold the middle of the screen, or press space or the up arrow. The engine fires while you hold; fuel drains while it fires.
- Lean — hold the left or right side of the screen, or the arrow keys. The lander tilts and the burn pushes you sideways as well as up.
- Watch three numbers — FUEL, ALT and V. V is your descent speed; it turns red when you are coming down too fast to survive.
- Touch down slow and level — under 6.5 m/s straight down, under 3 m/s sideways, and no more than a few degrees of tilt. Inside the pad, or it is a crash.
- Grade — S, A, B or C by how much fuel you kept. Landing with the tank nearly full is the real skill.
Lunar Lander Physics, Explained
On the Moon there is no air, so nothing slows you except your own engine, and gravity is one sixth of Earth's. That makes the first mission gentle in speed but unforgiving in judgement: every bit of speed you build up has to be burned off again, and there is no drag to help. The second mission moves to Earth — full gravity, air drag, a crosswind pushing you off line, and a drone ship deck that drifts. Same rocket, same controls, five times the gravity. Real boosters land this way: a single long burn timed so the speed reaches zero at the exact moment the legs touch. Too early and you hover and waste fuel; too late and there is no time left.
Why Rockets Land Vertically
A rocket that lands on its tail can be refuelled and flown again, which is why the modern launch industry went back to what the lunar module did in 1969. The hard part is the last hundred metres: the engine cannot throttle low enough to hover, so the pilot — or the flight computer — commits to a burn that ends at the ground. In this game that is your thumb on the screen. It is the same problem, with one engine and one chance.
A Retro Green Screen and a Modern Look — One Game
The Retro button switches the playfield to a monochrome green screen with square pixels, a bezel and a square-wave beeper — the way a lunar lander looked on the first handhelds and school terminals. Modern gives you the colour version. The physics underneath is identical: same gravity, same fuel, same touchdown rules. Switch mid-game if you like.
A Daily Mission, the Same for Everyone
Daily mode builds one mission a day from the date itself — pad position, wind, which world — so the mission you get is the mission everyone else on this page gets. No server, no account. Land it and your streak goes up; come back tomorrow for a new one. The free app runs its own daily global mission on the same idea with a worldwide leaderboard and a shareable result card.
Play Free Online — Then Catch the Booster in the App
This page has the Moon pad and the drone ship. The third mission, the tower catch — no legs, two arms, a booster hovering into them — is in the free Rocket Landing Simulator app for Android and iPhone, along with six worlds, ranks from Cadet to Legend, a daily global mission and a leaderboard. The browser version stays free and stays here.

Moon Lander Tips — How to Land Softly
- Kill sideways speed first. Lean against your drift until V-sideways is near zero, then level out. A tilted touchdown is a crash even at walking pace.
- One burn, late. Let it fall, then burn hard so your speed reaches zero right at the pad. Little burns all the way down waste fuel and still arrive fast.
- Watch V, not the ground. The number tells you what the eye cannot: 6 m/s looks slow from above and is not.
- On the drone ship, aim where the deck will be. It drifts; lead it the way you would lead a moving target.
- Keep fuel. An S grade needs most of the tank left. Efficiency is the score.
Stuck on the Drone Ship? A Repeatable Approach
Come in high and slow over the middle of the sea, kill your drift completely while you still have altitude, then let the wind carry you toward the deck and only lean into it in the last few seconds. The pilots who crash on this mission are the ones fighting the wind all the way down; the ones who land are letting it do the work and burning once at the end.
