Understanding Face Shapes

Your face shape is determined by the proportional relationship between four measurements: forehead width, cheekbone width, jawline width, and face length. These proportions create seven recognized face shape categories. Knowing your face shape helps you choose hairstyles, beard styles, and even glasses frames that create visual balance and complement your natural features.

The Seven Face Shapes

Oval: Considered the most versatile face shape. The forehead is slightly wider than the jaw, and face length is about 1.5 times the width. Almost any hairstyle and beard style works.

Round: Face width and length are approximately equal with a soft, curved jawline. The goal is to add vertical length — longer beards and hairstyles with height work best.

Square: A prominent, angular jawline with the forehead and jaw being similar in width. Soften the angles with textured hairstyles and rounded beard shapes.

Oblong/Rectangle: The face is noticeably longer than it is wide, with a relatively even width from forehead to jaw. Add width with side-swept hair and avoid long beards that elongate further.

Diamond: Cheekbones are the widest point, with a narrower forehead and jawline. Balance with volume at the forehead and chin — a full beard works excellently.

Heart: Wide forehead tapering to a narrow, sometimes pointed chin. Balance with a beard that adds width at the chin and jaw.

Triangle: Narrow forehead widening to a broad jaw. Add width at the forehead with styled hair and keep the beard trimmed to not widen the jaw further.

How to Measure Your Face

Use a flexible tape measure or ruler. Pull your hair back so your full hairline is visible. Measure forehead width at its widest point (temple to temple). Measure cheekbone width at the highest points of your cheekbones. Measure jawline width from the widest angle of your jaw on one side to the other. Measure face length from the center of your hairline straight down to the bottom of your chin.
