Why Vaccines Matter

Vaccines are one of the most effective public health interventions in history. They have eradicated smallpox, nearly eliminated polio, and dramatically reduced diseases like measles, whooping cough, and meningitis. Vaccines work by training the immune system to recognize and fight specific pathogens without causing the disease itself. When enough people in a community are vaccinated, herd immunity protects those who cannot be vaccinated, such as newborns and immunocompromised individuals.

CDC Recommended Schedule Overview

The CDC immunization schedule is developed by the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) and is updated annually. It begins at birth with the Hepatitis B vaccine and continues through age 18 with boosters and new vaccines. The schedule is designed to provide protection at the earliest age when children are most vulnerable to specific diseases. Each vaccine has been extensively tested for safety and effectiveness at the recommended ages.

What to Expect at Each Visit

At well-child visits during the first two years, your child may receive multiple vaccines at once. This is safe and reduces the number of office visits needed. Common side effects include mild fever, fussiness, and soreness at the injection site. These typically resolve within a day or two. Serious side effects are extremely rare. Your pediatrician will review your child's health history before each vaccination to ensure it is appropriate.

Catch-Up Vaccination

If your child has missed any vaccines, catch-up schedules allow them to get back on track. It is never too late to start vaccinating. The CDC provides catch-up guidelines for children who begin their vaccination series late or who are more than one month behind. Talk to your pediatrician about creating a catch-up plan tailored to your child's needs.

Using This Tracker

Enter your child's date of birth to see a personalized schedule showing which vaccines are due, overdue, or upcoming. Check off completed vaccines to track progress. Your data is saved in your browser's local storage, so it persists between visits but is never sent to any server. This tool supplements but does not replace your pediatrician's records.
