What Is a Printing Calculator?

A printing calculator — also called an adding machine or calculator with tape — is a calculator that records every number and operation on a paper roll. Accountants, bookkeepers, and auditors have used these machines for over a century because the tape provides a verifiable record of every keystroke. If a total looks wrong, you simply scan the tape to find the mistake.

Why Accountants Love the Tape

In double-entry bookkeeping, every journal entry must balance. The tape lets you add up debits on one run and credits on another, then compare the two totals. In reconciliation, you enter each bank statement item and check whether the running total matches the closing balance. The tape is your audit trail — it proves the math is right.

Features of This Calculator

Paper tape: Every operation scrolls upward like a receipt roll. Numbers are right-aligned and the operation symbol (+, −, ×, ÷) appears on the right edge. Memory: M+ adds the displayed value to memory, M− subtracts it, MR recalls it, MC clears it. Grand total: The GT button sums every subtotal you have computed with = during the session — useful for totaling multiple invoices or expense categories. Tax: Set your local tax rate and press +Tax or −Tax to add or remove tax from the current value.

Print, Copy, Download

Click Print to open the browser print dialog with just the tape — the keypad is hidden. Click Copy to copy the tape as plain text, ready to paste into a spreadsheet or email. Click Download to save a .txt file of the tape to your computer.

Use Cases

Bookkeeping: Enter daily transactions and verify the running balance. Invoicing: Total line items, add tax, and copy the tape into an email. Reconciliation: Match bank statement entries against your records. Auditing: Provide a clear calculation trail that a reviewer can verify line by line. Education: Learn how adding machines work without buying physical hardware.
