How Military Pay Works
Military compensation is more complex than civilian pay because it consists of multiple components, many of which are tax-free. Base pay is the primary taxable component and is determined by your pay grade (rank) and years of service. The 2026 military pay tables reflect the annual pay raise approved by Congress, which typically ranges from 2% to 5% based on the Employment Cost Index.
In addition to base pay, service members receive allowances that are not subject to federal income tax. The Basic Allowance for Housing (BAH) covers housing costs and varies by duty station, rank, and dependency status. The Basic Allowance for Subsistence (BAS) covers food costs and is set at $452.56 per month for enlisted members and $311.68 per month for officers in 2026. Tax Advantages of Military Pay

A service member earning $4,000 in base pay plus $2,000 in BAH plus $452 in BAS has a total monthly compensation of $6,452. However, only the $4,000 base pay is subject to federal income tax. This means the effective tax rate on total compensation is much lower than for a civilian earning the same total amount. For a married E-7 with 10 years of service in a high-cost area, the tax-free portion can represent 35-45% of total compensation.
