Camping Packing Tips

A well-organized packing list is the foundation of a successful camping trip. Whether you are car camping at an established campground or heading into the backcountry with everything on your back, forgetting a critical piece of gear can ruin the experience.

Start With the Essentials

Focus on the "big four" first: shelter, sleep system, food and water. Your tent, sleeping bag, sleeping pad and cooking setup are non-negotiable. Everything else is built around these core items. For backpacking trips, every ounce matters, so prioritize multi-use items.

Common Packing Mistakes

The most frequent mistakes include over-packing clothing (you need fewer changes than you think), forgetting rain gear even in clear forecasts, and not bringing enough lighting. A headlamp is essential — lanterns are nice but hands-free light is critical for camp tasks after dark.

Weight Considerations for Backpacking

For backpacking, your base weight (everything except consumables) should ideally be under 20 pounds. Ultralight hikers target under 10 pounds. The biggest weight savings come from your "big three" — tent, sleeping bag and backpack. Investing in lighter versions of these items has the biggest impact on your comfort on the trail.

Organize by Category

Pack items in stuff sacks or packing cubes organized by category. This makes it easier to find things at camp and helps you do a final check before heading home. Use a compression sack for your sleeping bag and keep rain gear accessible at the top of your pack.

Test Before You Go

Always set up your tent and test your stove at home before a trip. There is nothing worse than arriving at a remote campsite and discovering your tent poles are bent or your stove is out of fuel. A quick gear check saves enormous frustration in the field.
