Pet Weight Tracker
Track your pet's weight over time, check if they are in a healthy range, and monitor their body condition score.
Is Your Pet at a Healthy Weight?
Over 50% of dogs and cats in developed countries are overweight or obese. Just like in humans, excess weight leads to serious health problems: diabetes, joint disease, heart disease, and shorter lifespans. Research shows that lean dogs live an average of 2.5 years longer than overweight dogs.
Body Condition Score (BCS)
Veterinarians use a 9-point Body Condition Score to assess pet weight. A score of 4–5 is ideal. Here is how to check at home:
- Ribs: You should be able to feel individual ribs with light pressure, but not see them
- Waist: When viewed from above, there should be a visible waist behind the ribs
- Tummy: From the side, the abdomen should tuck up behind the ribcage
Healthy Weight Ranges by Size
Weight ranges vary dramatically by breed. A healthy Chihuahua weighs 3–6 lbs, while a healthy Great Dane weighs 110–175 lbs. The breed size selector in our tool gives you a general range, but your veterinarian can provide the most accurate target weight for your specific pet.
Weight Loss Tips for Pets
Never crash-diet a pet. Aim for 1–2% body weight loss per week. Measure food precisely (do not eyeball it). Cut treats to less than 10% of daily calories. Replace high-calorie treats with vegetables like green beans or carrots. Increase exercise gradually. And always consult your vet before starting a weight loss plan.
When to See the Vet
If your pet loses weight unexpectedly, gains weight rapidly despite normal portions, or you notice changes in appetite or thirst, schedule a vet visit. Sudden weight changes can indicate thyroid issues, diabetes, or other medical conditions.
