How the Tea Collection Tracker Works

This tool stores your entire tea inventory in your browser's local storage. Every tea you add gets saved with its name, type, origin, purchase date, weight, price, star rating, and your personal tasting notes. The dashboard updates automatically to show collection statistics — total teas owned, combined weight in grams, average rating across all entries, the most common tea type in your collection, and total amount spent.

You can search across tea names, origins, and tasting notes to find specific entries quickly. Filter by tea type to browse only green teas, oolongs, or any other category. Sort by name, rating, or date to organize the view. Every change is saved instantly and persists across browser sessions.

Organizing Your Tea Collection

A well-organized tea collection helps you know what you have, what needs restocking, and which teas you enjoy most. Start by adding each tea with accurate details — the origin field is especially useful for distinguishing between multiple green teas from different regions. Use the tasting notes field generously: describe the aroma, body, aftertaste, and any unique characteristics. Over time, these notes become invaluable for remembering which teas to reorder.

The rating system uses a simple one to five star scale. Rate teas immediately after tasting while the impression is fresh. Your average rating in the stats dashboard reveals whether you tend to buy teas you love or if many purchases disappoint — a signal to refine your sourcing. The type filter helps you discover if your collection is balanced or heavily weighted toward one category.

Exporting and Backing Up Your Data

Since all data lives in your browser, it is important to export regularly. The JSON export creates a complete backup of your collection that you can save to your computer, cloud storage, or share with fellow tea enthusiasts. The export includes every field for every tea entry. If you clear your browser data or switch devices, you can reference your export to rebuild your collection. For serious collectors with dozens or hundreds of teas, a monthly export habit ensures no tasting notes or ratings are ever lost.

Tea Types and What Makes Each Special

Green tea is unoxidized and ranges from grassy to nutty depending on origin. Black tea is fully oxidized with bold, malty, or fruity profiles. White tea is minimally processed with delicate floral notes. Oolong falls between green and black, offering complex layered flavors. Herbal teas are caffeine-free infusions made from flowers, roots, or herbs. Pu-erh is a fermented tea from Yunnan province with earthy, smooth character that improves with age. Rooibos is a South African plant with naturally sweet, caffeine-free properties. Tracking all these types in one place helps you appreciate the full spectrum of tea.
