How AI Document Question Answering Works

This tool uses a DistilBERT model fine-tuned on the SQuAD (Stanford Question Answering Dataset) to perform extractive question answering. When you paste a document and ask a question, the AI reads your entire document and finds the specific span of text that best answers your question. All processing happens locally in your browser using Transformers.js — your document text is never sent to any server.

Unlike generative AI tools that make up answers, this extractive QA model only returns text that actually exists in your document. This means the answers are grounded in your actual content, making it reliable for contract review, policy analysis, and research work.

What You Can Analyze

  • Contracts and agreements — Find termination clauses, payment terms, obligations
  • HR policies — Understand leave policies, benefits, work-from-home rules
  • Research papers — Extract key findings, methodology, conclusions
  • Legal documents — Identify parties, dates, conditions, penalties
  • Technical documentation — Find API endpoints, configuration options, requirements

Privacy-First Document Analysis

Most AI document tools require you to upload your files to cloud servers. This tool is fundamentally different. The AI model is downloaded once to your browser (approximately 65MB) and then runs entirely on your device. Your sensitive documents — whether employment contracts, medical records, financial reports, or legal agreements — never leave your computer.

Tips for Better Answers

For the best results, paste clean text without excessive formatting. Ask specific questions rather than broad ones. For example, instead of asking "What is this document about?", ask "What is the effective date of this agreement?" or "What happens if either party breaches the contract?" The model excels at finding factual answers to specific questions within the document text.

You can ask multiple questions about the same document. Each answer includes a confidence score so you know how certain the AI is, and the context is highlighted so you can verify the answer in the original text. This makes the tool ideal for quickly reviewing long documents without reading every page.
