How This Dual-Engine AI Translator Works
This translator combines two AI engines to give you the best translation experience in any browser:
Two AI Engines
- Chrome AI (instant): Uses Chrome's built-in Translator API and Language Detector API (Gemini Nano). No download needed, instant translations. Available in Chrome 138+ for ~12 language pairs.
- Universal AI (M2M100): Uses the Meta M2M100 model via Transformers.js. Supports 200+ language pairs. Works in all browsers. One-time model download (~200-400MB), then works offline.
The tool automatically selects the best engine. When Chrome AI supports the selected language pair, it uses Chrome's on-device Translator API for instant results. For all other pairs or non-Chrome browsers, it uses the M2M100 model which translates directly between languages without pivoting through English.
Auto-Detect Source Language
Select "Auto-Detect" as the source language, and the tool will identify the language of your input text. On Chrome 138+, this uses the Language Detector API powered by Gemini Nano for high-accuracy detection. On other browsers, it uses character-pattern analysis to identify scripts like Japanese, Korean, Chinese, Arabic, Cyrillic, and Devanagari, plus word-frequency analysis for European languages.
