Input Tax the UAE Does Not Let You Recover
Most VAT recovery errors in the UAE are not arithmetic, they are claims on costs that are blocked outright. Input tax on entertainment provided to anyone outside the business, such as hospitality for customers, suppliers or officials, is not recoverable at all. Motor vehicles that are available for personal use are blocked too, even where the business pays every running cost, and the exception is narrow: vehicles used exclusively for business, such as taxis, emergency vehicles or those in a rental fleet. Employee-related costs sit in the middle, recoverable only where providing the benefit is a legal obligation, a contractual entitlement, or a normal business practice rather than a personal perk. Two further conditions catch otherwise valid claims: you need a valid tax invoice in your name, and where you make both taxable and exempt supplies, input tax on shared costs has to be apportioned rather than claimed in full. Claiming a blocked cost is the kind of adjustment an audit finds quickly, so exclude it before you file rather than after. The rules are published by the Federal Tax Authority at tax.gov.ae.
