Australian Super Stapling Fund Check Calculator
Since November 2021, Australian employers must check the ATO's stapled super fund register before paying contributions to a default fund — the Your Future Your Super reforms. This calculator estimates stapling status and lifetime impact of staying with vs switching funds.
A super stapling fund check calculator is a free, browser-based tool that estimates the long-term balance difference between staying with your stapled super fund and switching to a lower-fee fund. It uses the legislated 12% Superannuation Guarantee rate (from 1 July 2025) and compounds the fee gap over your years to retirement — no login, no data leaves your device.
How Super Stapling Works
Your Future Your Super reforms (effective Nov 2021) made super funds 'stick' to employees — when you change jobs your new employer pays into your existing fund rather than a new default. ATO maintains the register; employers query it via Online Services for Business.
MySuper Performance Test
APRA runs an annual performance test against benchmarks. Funds that fail two consecutive tests are closed to new contributions. Check your stapled fund's most recent test result before deciding to stay or switch. Failure two years running is a hard signal to switch.
Fee Compounding Impact
A 25 basis point fee difference (0.25%) on a $75K balance growing 7% over 35 years compounds to ~$80K difference in final balance. Fees matter more than fund selection skill for most retail investors. Stay with low-fee funds (MySuper default 0.85% or below) unless there is a strong reason.
When to Use a Super Stapling Fund Check Calculator
Run a super stapling fund check calculator in three specific situations: (1) you started a new job after 1 November 2021 and an employer paid into your existing fund without asking — the calculator shows whether that stapled fund is still the cheapest long-term option; (2) you received an APRA "annual fund performance" letter flagging your fund as underperforming for one of the two consecutive years that triggers closure to new contributions; (3) you are within 10 years of retirement, when a 25 basis-point fee gap still compounds to meaningful five-figure dollar swings on a A$200K+ balance. Compare your numbers with the AU Income Tax Calculator to see net take-home plus retirement trajectory together. Source: ATO — Request stapled super fund details for employees.
