Rule of X is Bessemer Venture Partners' 2026 update to the legacy Rule of 40 for SaaS companies. Formula: Rule of X = ARR Growth × 2 + FCF Margin. The 2× growth weighting recognizes that public and private SaaS markets reward growth more than profitability for high-growth companies. A score above 100 puts you in the top decile of public SaaS — eligible for premium revenue multiples.

Why Rule of X Beats Rule of 40

The original Rule of 40 (growth + FCF margin ≥ 40) treated growth and FCF as substitutes — 60% growth + (-20%) margin = same score as 30% growth + 10% margin. Public market data over 2023-2025 showed this is wrong: investors valued the first company 3-5x higher per revenue dollar. Rule of X (growth × 2 + FCF) correctly weights growth above FCF for SaaS companies. Bessemer's 2026 State of the Cloud report formalized the framework, citing public multiples that correlate r²=0.78 with Rule of X vs r²=0.42 with Rule of 40.

How to Use Rule of X

(1) High-growth (50%+ ARR growth): ignore FCF, maximize growth investment. Score above 100 = top decile. (2) Mid-growth (25-50%): balance growth and FCF — aim for 75+. (3) Mature SaaS (under 25% growth): pivot to FCF generation — Rule of X harder to game with low growth, so FCF margin becomes dominant lever. (4) For board reporting and investor pitches, lead with Rule of X. Show the trajectory not just the current score.
