Canada 2028 Canada Child Benefit (CCB) provides up to $7,800/year per child under 6 and $6,580 per child age 6-17 (projected, indexed CPI). Tax-free monthly payment. Phase-out tiers at AFNI $36,500 (full) and $79,100 (rapid). Replaces UCCB + CCTB since 2016.
Phase-Out Mechanics
Two-tier phase-out from $36,500 AFNI. Below threshold = full benefit. Above $79,100 = steeper rate. Phase-out rates depend on number of children — more children = more steeply phased out (paradoxical but maintains progressivity). Family with 4 kids and $250k income may receive only $1,000-$2,000 vs $30k+ if low income.
Monthly Tax-Free Payment
Paid 20th of each month directly to primary caregiver (usually mother). Tax-free — not added to taxable income. Recalculated July each year based on prior tax return. File tax return even if no income to maintain CCB.
Shared Custody Split
Shared custody: each parent gets 50% of CCB. Sole custody: 100% to custodial parent. Document custody arrangements with CRA. Family income test uses each parent's own AFNI when shared.
