TFSA (Tax-Free Savings Account) lets Canadians earn investment income tax-free. The 2026 annual limit is $7 000 (estimated). Cumulative lifetime room for someone eligible since 2009 is approximately $97 000. Unused room carries forward indefinitely.
Annual Limits 2009-2026
2009-2012: $5 000. 2013-2014: $5 500. 2015: $10 000 (one-time hike). 2016-2018: $5 500. 2019-2022: $6 000. 2023: $6 500. 2024-2026: $7 000. Each year adds new room if you're a Canadian resident 18+.
Withdrawals Add Back Next Year
TFSA withdrawals don't immediately restore room — they're added to your contribution room on January 1 of the NEXT calendar year. Common error: withdraw $5K in December, re-contribute in January — counts as new contribution.
Over-Contribution Penalty
1% per month on excess over your limit. Easy to trigger by tracking incorrectly. Always verify with CRA My Account before large contributions. Penalty applies even if you withdraw immediately.
