Sabbatical Financial Planning Calculator
A career sabbatical of 3-12 months costs more than just monthly expenses — add lost income, lost retirement contributions, health insurance, and re-entry job search buffer. Calculate the full price of taking time off.
True Sabbatical Cost
Most people calculate sabbatical cost as monthly expenses × months. The reality includes: lost salary ($60K-$200K depending on level), lost bonus/stock ($10K-$100K+), lost 401(k) employer match ($5K-$15K), COBRA or marketplace health insurance ($500-$1,500/month for family), and re-entry job search buffer (2-3 months expenses). All-in cost is typically 2-3x just the burn rate.
Health Insurance Options
COBRA continues your employer plan but costs you the full premium plus 2% admin fee (typically $600-$1,500/month for family). ACA marketplace plans may be cheaper (~$400-$1,200/month) with subsidies if your sabbatical income is low. Short-term plans (limited duration, limited coverage) cheapest but exclude pre-existing conditions. Health share ministries lowest cost but not regulated insurance.
Re-Entry Strategy
Plan re-entry 2-3 months before your target return date. Sabbatical resume gaps require explanation; frame as 'intentional reset' or 'caregiver/personal project,' not 'unemployment.' Network actively during sabbatical — most re-entry jobs come from existing connections, not job applications. Build skills relevant to your next role.
