Teachers earn 15-30% less than private-sector knowledge workers but accrue defined-benefit pensions worth $500K to $1.5M present value at 30 years of service. The trade-off depends heavily on state pension multiplier, COLA, vesting cliffs, and your remaining career length. Strong-pension states (CA, NY, IL, MA, OH) typically beat the private-sector alternative for 25+ year veterans; weak-pension states (TX, KY, AL) often don’t.

Why Defined-Benefit Pensions Are So Valuable

A defined-benefit pension is a guaranteed annuity for life. A 30-year veteran in California (CalSTRS at 2% × high-3 × years) earning $90K final salary receives $54K/year for life. If you retire at 62 and live to 84, that’s 22 years × $54K = $1.19M in nominal payments, indexed for partial inflation via COLA. Present value at a 5% discount rate is roughly $750K-$900K — equivalent to a $750-900K 401(k) balance, except no market risk and guaranteed for life. Replicating this with a private 401(k) requires saving roughly 20-25% of salary for 30 years and earning 7%+ returns consistently.

Cliffs That Destroy the Math

Teacher pensions are back-loaded. Most have a vesting cliff at 5-10 years (leave before, get only your own contributions back — no employer match). A benefit cliff at 25-30 years where the multiplier jumps and full retirement age moves earlier. Leaving at year 8 of a 25-year vesting plan forfeits roughly 80% of the lifetime value. Leaving at year 22 of a 25-year plan can forfeit 30-50% of the peak benefit. Before any mid-career switch, calculate exactly what you’d forfeit and what your new role would need to pay to break even. Many teachers underestimate the lifetime value of staying just 3-5 more years to hit the next cliff.
