The 457(b) + 401(k) Double

457(b) and 401(k)/403(b) have SEPARATE annual limits. Public-sector employees (state/local government, schools, nonprofits) can max BOTH. 2027 estimate: 457(b) $23,500 + 401(k)/403(b) $23,500 = $47,000 pre-tax shelter.

Catch-Up Doubling

Age 50+: each plan allows $7,500 catch-up = additional $15,000. Age 60-63: SECURE 2.0 super catch-up doubles to $10k each = $20k. Maximum at age 60-63: $47k + $20k = $67,000 annual deferral.

457(b) Withdrawal Advantage

457(b) has NO 10% early withdrawal penalty when you separate from service. Retire at 50 with 457(b) = penalty-free immediate access. 401(k) requires 55+ for similar (and only for that employer's plan).
