Every dollar gets a job. Income - Allocations = $0. Forces intentionality on EVERY dollar. Unlike 50/30/20 which is rough, zero-based is precise to the penny each month.

Required Categories

Housing (rent/mortgage/property tax/utilities), Food (grocery + dining out separate), Transportation (gas/maintenance/insurance/car payment), Insurance (health/life), Debt (minimums + extra), Savings (emergency/retirement/sinking), Fun (no judgment).

Variable Income Solution

If income varies (freelance/commission), budget based on LAST month's income, not next month's. Or budget conservatively against 6-month low. Excess income → emergency fund.

Common Mistakes

Forgetting irregular bills (car insurance 6-month, Christmas, property tax). Solution: divide annual amount by 12, set aside monthly. No 'misc' category — be specific.
