About Golf Solitaire

Golf Solitaire is a free single-player card game. Seven columns of cards make up the board. You clear them by moving the bottom card of any column onto the open card — but only if it is one number higher or one number lower than the open card. When you run out of moves, flip a new card from the deck. Clear all seven columns to win the deal.

Every deal is winnable

Most Golf Solitaire apps deal random hands, and many of them can't be won — a frustrating dead end. This one is different: a solver checks every deal before you see it, so a winning line always exists. No wasted games. Build a long streak — it is saved on your device, waiting for you when you come back.

How to play

Tap any card at the bottom of a column that is one rank up or down from the open card (for example, on a 7 you can play a 6 or an 8). Aces are low and do not wrap to Kings. Chain cards without flipping the deck to build a combo for a higher score. Tap the deck to flip a new open card when you are stuck.

The board is seven columns of cards, a face-down deck and one open card. Only the bottom card of a column can be played, and it can only go onto the open card when it is exactly one rank higher or one rank lower. Suits and colours are ignored completely — a red 6 goes onto a black 7 as happily as a black 6 does. Aces are low and the run does not wrap, so an Ace only takes a 2 and a King only takes a Queen. When you have no legal move, turn a card from the deck to become the new open card. The deal is won when all seven columns are empty, and lost when the deck runs out with cards still on the table.

Golf Solitaire Strategy — How to Clear More Columns

Most losses come from taking the easy card instead of the useful one. Four habits change that:

• Read one move ahead, not zero. Before you play a card, ask what the new open card lets you take next. Playing an 8 that leaves you nothing is worse than playing a 6 that opens a chain.
• Attack the tall columns first. A column with six cards left is a much bigger problem at the end of the deal than one with two. Spend your early flexibility there.
• Do not flip while a chain is alive. Every deck flip resets your combo and burns one of a fixed number of cards. Exhaust the table before you touch the deck.
• Watch which ranks are stranded. If both black 9s are buried under Kings, plan a route to those Kings early rather than discovering the problem with four cards left.

Why Every Deal Here Is Winnable

This is the single biggest difference between this version and most free Golf Solitaire games. A random shuffle produces a large number of hands that are mathematically impossible to clear, and you cannot tell which ones from looking at the board — so you play a dead hand for two minutes and never find out it was dead. Here a solver plays every deal before you see it and rejects any that cannot be cleared. The practical effect is that losing is information: it means a line existed and you missed it, which makes replaying the same deal worth doing.

Golf Solitaire vs Klondike and Spider

Klondike — the solitaire that shipped with Windows — is about uncovering face-down cards and building four foundations by suit. Spider is about assembling long same-suit runs across ten columns. Golf is neither: there are no foundations, no suits to respect and nothing hidden. Everything is face up from the first second, so the whole game is a sequencing problem you can see in full. That makes deals short — a minute or two rather than ten — and makes it a better fit for a break than a sit-down session. If you want the longer, harder version of a card game, Forty Thieves and Scorpion are on the other end of that scale.
