Rent Tax Credit Rules

Introduced 2022 budget. Worth €500 single, €1,000 jointly assessed couple. 20% of rent paid (capped €5k single / €10k joint). Tenancy must be registered with RTB.

Eligibility Criteria

Pay rent on Irish private rental property. Tenancy registered with RTB. Not in social housing, HAP, RAS schemes. Not in same household as landlord (excludes rent-a-room).

Backclaim Years

Can backclaim 2022, 2023, 2024 if eligible but never applied. Each year worth €500 max single. Up to €2,000 backclaim possible single, €4,000 joint.

Reduces Tax Owed

Credit reduces tax liability. If you owe nothing (low income), no benefit. Most renters earning €25k+ will owe enough tax to use full credit.
