Budget 2026 doubled the Rent Tax Credit from €500/€1,000 to €1,000/€2,000. Apply to ALL principal private residence rentals — not just those in tax-deductible Rent-a-Room or rent supplement scheme. Renting from a parent or close relative doesn't qualify.

Who Can Claim

Tenants paying rent on principal residence (PPR). Both standard renters AND those renting under approved schemes for college students. Must have a written tenancy agreement and the landlord must be tax-compliant (PPS-registered).

How to Claim

Submit Form 11 or claim via PAYE Anytime / MyAccount on Revenue.ie. Need landlord PPS number and tenancy registration number (RTB). Refund issued as PAYE credit reducing this year's tax bill or refund of overpaid PAYE.

Year Coverage

Available for tax years 2022 through 2027. Backdate up to 4 years — if you didn't claim 2023, file now for retrospective €500 (old rate). Combined backclaim can be substantial (€1,500-€4,000 for couples).
