Smokers typically pay 2-3x more for term life insurance than nonsmokers. According to LIMRA and 2024 Society of Actuaries (SOA) mortality data, smoker mortality rates run roughly 2x nonsmoker rates across most age bands, which is why carriers price the difference so heavily. A 40-year-old male smoker buying $500K 20-year term will pay roughly $1,400/year vs $480/year as a nonsmoker — a $920 annual penalty.
Who Counts as a Smoker
Most US carriers classify any tobacco or nicotine use within the past 12 months as smoker, including: cigarettes, cigars (even occasional), pipe tobacco, chewing tobacco, snuff, nicotine gum/patches, and e-cigarettes/vaping. Marijuana use is treated differently — some carriers classify daily users as smokers, while occasional use may qualify for nonsmoker rates with select carriers like Prudential and Lincoln. Carriers verify via blood and urine testing (cotinine detection) during the medical exam.
Quitting Before You Apply
The 12-month nicotine-free window is the key threshold. Apply 12+ months after your last nicotine use to qualify for nonsmoker rates with most carriers. Some carriers (Banner, Protective) require 24 months for the best preferred-plus nonsmoker classes. The savings on a 20-year $500K policy can exceed $18,000 lifetime — far more than any nicotine replacement therapy costs. After your policy is issued at smoker rates, you can request reconsideration after 12 months smoke-free, and the carrier will retest and reclassify if the cotinine test is negative.
How to Lower Smoker Rates
(1) Apply to multiple carriers — Prudential and Lincoln historically price smokers more competitively. (2) Improve other health factors — clean cholesterol, low BMI, low blood pressure can push you into preferred smoker rather than standard smoker, saving 15-25%. (3) Shorter term length — a 10-year smoker term is far cheaper than a 30-year. (4) Request reconsideration after 12 months smoke-free. (5) Guaranteed issue policies for older smokers — no medical exam, but coverage is capped at $25K-$50K.
