Long-Term Care (LTC) insurance pays for nursing home, assisted living, and in-home care that Medicare does NOT cover. 70% of Americans over 65 will need some form of LTC during their lifetime, with median cost $5,000-$10,000/month. LTC insurance premiums depend on age at purchase, daily benefit, benefit period, elimination period, and inflation protection.

What LTC Covers

Nursing home, assisted living facility, adult day care, home health aide. Triggered when you can't perform 2 of 6 Activities of Daily Living (ADLs): bathing, dressing, eating, toileting, transferring, continence. Also covers cognitive impairment (Alzheimer's, dementia). Does NOT cover acute medical care — that's Medicare's job.

The Inflation Problem

Nursing home costs have risen 4-5% annually for 20 years. A $200/day policy bought in 2005 only covers half of 2025 costs without inflation rider. Add 5% compound inflation rider — premium nearly doubles, but coverage keeps pace. For buyers under 60, inflation rider is essential.

Hybrid LTC Alternatives

Traditional LTC: pay annual premium, get nothing if you never claim. Hybrid LTC / life insurance: single premium ($50K-$150K) or 5-10 year payment funds both an LTC benefit pool AND a death benefit. If you don't use LTC, heirs receive death benefit. No premium hike risk. Carrier: Genworth, Lincoln, Brighthouse, OneAmerica. Growing market share vs traditional LTC.
