Veterans Disability Compensation Calculator
VA disability compensation pays monthly tax-free benefits to veterans rated 10-100% disabled. The combined rating formula is non-additive — two 30% disabilities equal 51%, not 60%. The 2026 rates increased 2.5% via annual COLA.
How VA Combined Rating Works
VA combined disability is non-additive. Two 30% ratings combine to 51%, not 60%. The 'whole person' starts at 100% remaining. Each rating reduces the remaining capacity: first 30% leaves 70%, second 30% reduces by 30% of 70% (21 points), totaling 51%. VA Math is the source of many veteran disputes.
Dependent Add-On Amounts
Veterans rated 30%+ receive add-on for dependents. Spouse adds $60-$200 depending on rating. Each child under 18 (or full-time student under 23) adds an amount. Dependent parents (means-tested) add $51-$170. Adding all dependents can boost monthly comp by 20-30%.
Special Monthly Compensation (SMC)
Veterans with severe disabilities qualify for SMC on top of base rate. SMC-K for loss of use (limb, eyes): adds ~$130/month. SMC-S (housebound): adds ~$430. SMC-L (aid + attendance): adds ~$1,070. SMC-T (severe TBI): can exceed $11,000/month total. These are separate from the rating schedule.
