The KiwiSaver Government Contribution (formerly Member Tax Credit, MTC) is a $0.50 match per $1 you contribute, capped at NZ$521.43 per year. To claim the full match, you need to contribute at least NZ$1,042.86 between 1 July and 30 June. IRD calculates and pays the contribution in July each year. Eligibility: NZ resident aged 18-64. How the Government Match Works

For every $1 you contribute to KiwiSaver (employee, self-employed, or voluntary), the government contributes $0.50 — capped at NZ$521.43 per year. The match year runs 1 July to 30 June (not the tax year). IRD calculates the match in July and pays it directly to your KiwiSaver provider. Employer contributions and government KickStart payments do NOT count toward the threshold — only your own contributions.

Who Qualifies and Who Misses Out

Eligibility: NZ resident, aged 18 to 64 inclusive, contributing to KiwiSaver, with a NZ-based KiwiSaver scheme. The government contribution stops the day you turn 65 (pro-rated if your 65th birthday is mid-year). Non-residents do not qualify even if they remain enrolled. Children under 18 do not qualify — but Child KiwiSaver members under 18 still benefit from any employer contribution if employed.

Self-Employed and Contractor Strategy

Self-employed earners contribute via online banking direct to their KiwiSaver provider (not through PAYE). Set up a monthly direct debit of NZ$87 (~ NZ$1,042/year) to ensure the threshold is hit by 30 June. Use the reference field as instructed by your provider — typically your IRD number plus a code like "KiwiSaver". Confirm via your provider portal that the payment is flagged as a member contribution (not as a transfer or fee).
