How ACC Compensation Works

ACC pays 80% of your pre-injury earnings for time off work due to injury. Minimum compensation tracks the minimum wage; maximum is capped (~NZ$2,521/wk in 2026, adjusted annually). Compensation is taxable income. For workplace injuries, your employer pays the first week; ACC pays from week 2 onwards.

Eligibility Requirements

ACC covers all NZ residents and visitors regardless of fault. You must be: (1) physically present in NZ at time of injury (with some exceptions), (2) unable to work due to injury (medical certificate required), (3) earning at time of injury (or eligible under another category). Self-employed and casual workers may need to prove earnings via tax records.

Other ACC Entitlements

Beyond weekly compensation, ACC covers: medical treatment costs, rehabilitation services, home help, transport to appointments, lump sum permanent impairment ($3K-$200K), child care costs, equipment, and vocational rehabilitation. File via online portal at acc.co.nz.
