KiwiSaver Employer Contribution 2027
Current default: 3% of gross salary. 2025 Government coalition proposed raising to 4% by 2028 to address NZ retirement savings gap. Employer can contribute more voluntarily. Employee minimum contribution: 3%, with 4%, 6%, 8%, 10% options. Contributions automatically deducted from pay.
ESCT Tax Tiers
Employer Superannuation Contribution Tax (ESCT) applied to employer KiwiSaver contributions: 10.5% (income < NZ$48,000), 17.5% (< $70K), 30% (< $180K), 33% (> $180K). Tax payable by employer on contribution. Reduces net contribution but employee still receives full amount in KiwiSaver.
Government Annual Contribution
Member Tax Credit (MTC): NZ$0.50 per $1 of employee contribution, up to maximum NZ$521.43 per year (requires NZ$1,042.86 employee contribution). Available for ages 18-64 who are NZ tax residents and meet residence requirements. Free money — always contribute at least enough to maximize.
