Eligibility at 65

NZ Super starts the day you turn 65. You must have been a NZ resident for at least 10 years since age 20, with 5 of those years after age 50. No means test — everyone who qualifies gets it, regardless of other income.

Weekly Rates 2026/27

Single living alone: NZ$575.30/week (after tax M code). Single sharing: NZ$530.91. Couple, both qualify: NZ$443.78 each. These are AFTER-tax M code rates; gross rates are higher and PAYE deducts at your tax code.

Tax Code Choice (M, SM)

Default M code if NZ Super is your main income (lower tax). SM (Super Main) is similar. S codes for secondary employment income alongside NZ Super. Pick the code that matches the order of your income sources.

Overseas Pension Offset

If you receive an equivalent overseas pension (UK, AU, Canada, etc.), NZ Super is reduced dollar-for-dollar by that pension amount. Special bilateral agreements complicate calculations — contact Senior Services for an exact assessment.
