Employee PPL — 26 Weeks

26 weeks of PPL at your normal gross weekly pay, capped at NZ$754.87 (from 1 July 2026). Funded by government, paid through IRD. To qualify: 6+ months with same employer, working 10+ hours/week before due date. Apply via MyIR.

Self-Employed PPL

Same 26 weeks but payment = greater of (your average weekly self-employed income) or (10× minimum wage = NZ$232.50/week minimum). Self-employed must have been in business 6+ months and worked 10+ hours/week.

Negotiated Carer Leave

PPL can be transferred to your partner, split between you, or taken alongside Unpaid Parental Leave (up to 52 weeks total). The 26 weeks is per child, not per parent — share or trade strategically.

Tax Treatment

PPL is taxable income — PAYE is deducted at standard rates by IRD. Use M tax code (or SM for secondary income). The cap means high earners take a pay cut, but middle-income earners receive close to full weekly pay.
