When You Become Overseas-Based
After 184 consecutive days outside NZ. Reset clock if you return to NZ for 6+ months. Notification: log into myIR and update residence status. Failure to notify = penalty interest + possible default. Hardship arrangements available — reduce or temporarily suspend overseas-based repayments via IRD application.
Loan Interest (Overseas-Based)
Interest charged from day you become overseas-based. Rate set annually by Tax Working Group / IRD — typically 4-5% per year. Compound monthly. Some PAYE-equivalent jurisdictions (e.g. Australia) negotiate withholding agreements but IRD still tracks balance. Interest accrues until you return to NZ permanently (interest-free reinstated) OR pay off completely.
Repayment Strategies
(1) NZ-based with income just above $24,128: voluntary lump sums to reduce principal faster (no early-payment penalty). (2) Overseas-based: pay above tier minimum to attack interest. Even $5,000-$10,000 extra/year saves thousands. (3) Returning NZer with overseas-based loan: pay down before becoming NZ-based to clear interest. (4) Hardship application possible for genuine financial difficulty. (5) Death: loan written off. (6) Bankruptcy: loan generally survives unless full bankruptcy discharges.
