NZ Super 2026 Rates (After Tax 'M')
Single, living alone: NZ$538.10/week ($27,981/year). Single, sharing: NZ$494.92/week ($25,736/year). Couple, both qualifying: NZ$413.93/week each ($21,524/year each, $43,047 combined). Couple, only one qualifying: NZ$413.93/week. Rates indexed to CPI and wage growth annually each April. After-tax amounts assume M tax code; other codes change net amount.
NZ Super Eligibility (2026)
Age 65+. New Zealand citizen, permanent resident, or holder of certain residence visas. Resident AND ordinarily resident in NZ at application date. Lived in NZ 10+ years since age 20, with 5 of those after age 50. Visits to NZ as tourist do not count toward residency. From July 2024, residency requirement increases gradually to 20 years by 2042 for new applicants.
NZ Super Is Universal — No Means Test
Unlike many countries, NZ Super is NOT means-tested. Wealthy and low-income retirees receive the same payment. Work income, KiwiSaver withdrawals, investment income do NOT reduce NZ Super. You can earn unlimited wages while collecting NZ Super. Tax applies to NZ Super same as other income. Combined retirement income (NZ Super + KiwiSaver + savings) for typical retiree: NZ$45K-NZ$70K/year.
Working While on NZ Super — Often Optimal
Many retirees continue working part-time and receive full NZ Super. No reduction. Income is taxed at marginal rate (NZ Super + work wages = combined taxable income). Tax brackets 2026: 10.5% up to $14,000; 17.5% $14,001-$48,000; 30% $48,001-$70,000; 33% $70,001-$180,000; 39% $180,001+. Choose tax code S/SH/ST so PAYE deducted matches your bracket.
