How the Prep Pantry Tracker Works

This tracker logs every emergency food item with its expiry date, then sorts the list FIFO — first to expire, first to use. Items expiring within 30 days are flagged in the "Expiring Soon" filter; items already past their date move to "Expired." Nothing uploads anywhere: your pantry data lives only in your browser's localStorage, which means closing the tab keeps it, but clearing browser data wipes it.

Why FIFO Rotation Matters for Prep Food

The single biggest failure mode in long-term food storage is not spoilage from bad conditions — it is forgetting. A family spends $400 stocking a prep shelf, then two years later discovers half of it expired unused. FIFO rotation prevents this: you eat the oldest stock first during normal meals, replace it with fresh, and the emergency supply stays current. This tool surfaces what is about to expire so you cook it on a Tuesday instead of throwing it out in a year.

The 30-Day Expiry Warning

Most commercially canned food has a "best by" date rather than a hard expiry. Canned meats, vegetables, and soups are safe well beyond that date if the can is undamaged, but texture and nutrition degrade. The tool flags 30 days before the printed date so you have time to eat or donate items before they drop in quality. For water, flour, and medications the warning window matters more — treat those flags seriously.

Shopping List Auto-Generation

Every item in the Expired or Expiring Soon filter gets added to the Shopping List panel below. One-click copy sends the entire list to your clipboard, ready to paste into a grocery order or notes app. The list uses the item name and category so you can group similar purchases.

Privacy: Nothing Leaves Your Browser

Your pantry inventory reveals what food you have, what medications you store, and how prepared you are. None of that data leaves this tool. There is no account, no cloud sync, no analytics on your items. The tradeoff: you cannot access the pantry from a different device. If you need multi-device sync, use the Export CSV button and store the file somewhere you control.
