Inna salati wa nusuki wa mahyaya wa mamati lillahi rabbil 'alamin, la sharika lahu wa bidhalika umirtu wa ana minal Muslimin. Allahumma minka wa laka.
Indeed my prayer, my sacrifice, my living and my dying are for Allah, Lord of the worlds. He has no partner. With this I have been commanded and I am of those who submit. O Allah, this is from You and for You.

What is Qurbani Niyat?
Niyat (Arabic: نية) means "intention" — it is the inner resolve to perform an act of worship for the sake of Allah. According to the famous hadith narrated by Umar ibn al-Khattab (Sahih Bukhari 1, Sahih Muslim 1907), "Actions are judged by intentions." The qurbani niyat is not a verbal formula required by sharia, but a sincere intention in the heart that the sacrifice is being offered solely to Allah. Reciting a niyat verbally is mustahabb (recommended) and helps reinforce focus at the moment of sacrifice. The Arabic dua on this card is the one Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) recited during his own qurbani.
When and How to Make the Niyat
The niyat for qurbani should be made before the sacrifice begins — ideally at the moment the knife is placed on the animal's neck. If you are not personally slaughtering the animal (most people in cities have a butcher do it), you make the niyat in your heart and may also recite the Arabic dua out loud while the butcher performs the act. According to the Hanafi school, you should also recite "Bismillah, Allahu Akbar" at the time of sacrifice — this is the tasmiyah and is wajib. The full sequence is: face the qiblah, lay the animal on its left side, say "Bismillah Allahu Akbar" then make the niyat (the dua on this card), then complete the dhabh (slaughter).
Niyat for Multiple Animals or Shared Cow
If you are part of a 7-share cow or camel, each shareholder must make their own individual niyat — the intention is personal and cannot be transferred. The lead person making the dua can recite the Arabic on behalf of everyone, but each shareholder should silently confirm "this is my qurbani for Allah" in their heart. You may also do qurbani on behalf of a deceased relative (such as a late father, mother, or grandparent) — this is permitted and considered a great act of sadaqah jariyah. The niyat in that case is: "O Allah, this qurbani is from me on behalf of [name]." Use our Qurbani Cost Calculator to plan the budget if you are doing multiple qurbanis.
Common Mistakes to Avoid in Qurbani Niyat
- Treating it as a magic formula: The niyat is intention, not incantation. If you forget the Arabic dua, your qurbani is still valid as long as you intended it for Allah.
- Skipping Bismillah: While the niyat dua is recommended, "Bismillah Allahu Akbar" at the moment of slaughter is wajib in the Hanafi school — deliberately omitting it makes the meat haram.
- Mixing intentions: Don't combine qurbani with aqiqah (newborn sacrifice) — they are separate acts and each needs its own animal and niyat.
- Making niyat too early: The valid window for qurbani is from after Eid prayer on 10 Dhul Hijjah until sunset on 12 Dhul Hijjah (Hanafi) or 13 Dhul Hijjah (Shafi'i). Sacrificing before Eid prayer is not counted as qurbani.
- Outsourcing without intent: If you pay a charity (Islamic Relief, Muslim Hands) to do qurbani in another country, you still must make the niyat in your heart at the time you book it. The charity acts as your wakil (agent), not the one whose intention counts.
