CPF LIFE Escalating vs Standard Plan 2026 Comparison

How CPF LIFE Escalating Plan Works
The Escalating Plan increases monthly payouts by 2% every year, compounded. If your starting payout is S$1,340, year 10 is S$1,634, year 20 is S$1,991. The trade-off: starting payouts are 19–20% lower than Standard Plan. The bequest also depletes faster, so leaving an inheritance from CPF is less likely (source: cpf.gov.sg/members/schemes/cpf-life).
When Escalating Beats Standard
Escalating wins in real (inflation-adjusted) lifetime payouts when: (1) you live past 78–80, (2) inflation averages ≥ 2.5% per year, and (3) you spend most of your monthly payout on inflation-sensitive expenses (food, healthcare, utilities). Singapore long-run CPI is ~2.2% (2010–2025 average) so Escalating breaks even around age 80 for most retirees.
Default Plan and Switching Rules
The Standard Plan is the default at age 65 if you do not actively choose. You can switch to Escalating or Basic any time before your first payout, but cannot change after payouts begin. Once locked in, the plan is permanent (source: cpf.gov.sg).
Bequest Differences
Standard Plan typically leaves a higher bequest because the annuity portion is smaller. Escalating Plan depletes the CPF balance faster as payouts rise, so bequests at age 85 are typically 30–40% smaller than Standard.
