The Massachusetts Paid Family and Medical Leave (PFML) program lets workers take paid time off for their own serious medical condition or to care for a family member. For 2026, the total contribution rate is 0.88% of wages — split between medical leave (0.70%) and family leave (0.18%) — administered by the Department of Family and Medical Leave (DFML).

2026 MA PFML Rates Explained

Employees always pay the full 0.18% family leave portion plus 0.28% of the medical leave portion, totaling a maximum of 0.46% withheld from each paycheck. If your employer has 25 or more employees, the employer pays the remaining 0.42% of medical leave. Small employers under 25 are not required to pay the employer portion but must still withhold and remit the employee's 0.46%. Contributions apply only up to the Social Security wage base ($176,100 for 2026).

How Much Will Your Weekly Benefit Be

MA PFML uses a progressive formula: 80% of your average weekly wage up to 50% of the state average weekly wage (SAWW), then 50% of any wages above that threshold, capped at the statutory maximum of $1,170.64 per week in 2026. For example, a worker earning $1,500/week receives approximately the maximum benefit because the second-tier formula compresses high earners' replacement rate.

How Long Can You Take Leave

You can take up to 12 weeks of family leave to bond with a new child or care for a family member, plus up to 20 weeks of medical leave for your own serious health condition. The combined maximum is 26 weeks in a single benefit year. Military caregiver leave can extend up to 26 weeks. A seven-day waiting period applies, but the new-child bonding leave has no waiting period if taken within the first year of birth or placement.
