Alaska Civil Rule 90.3 sets child support as a percentage of the paying parent's adjusted annual income: 20% for one child, 27% for two, 33% for three and 3% more for each additional child. The percentages apply to adjusted income up to $138,000 a year, the minimum is $50 a month, and a separate formula applies when custody is shared.

How Alaska Child Support Is Calculated

Adjusted annual income is total income from all sources minus mandatory deductions such as federal income tax, Social Security and Medicare tax, mandatory union dues and mandatory retirement contributions. Limited voluntary retirement contributions, support paid for children of a prior relationship and work-related childcare for the children in the case are also deducted. Enter that adjusted figure as a monthly amount; the calculator annualises it.

Worked Example: Alaska Rule 90.3

With adjusted income of $5,000 a month ($60,000 a year), two children and 91 overnights (under 30% of the year), the other parent has primary custody. Support is 27% of $60,000, which is $16,200 a year or $1,350.00 a month.

Shared Custody and Health Insurance in Alaska

Shared physical custody applies when the children live with each parent at least 30% of the year under the custody order. Each parent's primary-custody amount is multiplied by the share of time the other parent has the children; the parent with the larger figure pays the difference multiplied by 1.5, but never more than the primary-custody amount. With 146 overnights (40%) and incomes of $5,000 and $3,000 a month, the estimate falls to $729.00 a month.

The court divides the cost of the children's health insurance equally unless there is good cause to do otherwise: support is reduced by the other parent's half when the paying parent buys the cover, and increased by the paying parent's half when the other parent buys it. The court may also allow a reduction of up to 75% for periods of extended visitation of more than 27 consecutive days, which this page does not estimate.

Estimate Only: Who Sets the Alaska Order

This page gives an estimate only — the court or the state child support agency sets the order, and either can depart from the guideline where the law allows. Before relying on any figure, confirm the amount with the Alaska Child Support Enforcement Division. The governing text is Alaska Civil Rule 90.3.

If your income, the parenting schedule or the children's needs change, ask the court or the agency to review the order, and keep paying the ordered amount until it is changed. Last updated: October 2026.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is child support calculated in Alaska?

Under Alaska Civil Rule 90.3, the parent without primary custody pays a percentage of adjusted annual income: 20% for one child, 27% for two, 33% for three, and 3% more for each additional child. The percentages apply to adjusted annual income up to $138,000, and the minimum is $50 a month.

What is adjusted annual income in Alaska?

It is total income from all sources minus mandatory deductions such as federal income tax, Social Security and Medicare tax, mandatory union dues and mandatory retirement contributions. Limited voluntary retirement contributions, support paid for prior children and work-related childcare for the children in the case are also deducted.

How does shared custody affect Alaska child support?

Shared custody applies when the children live with each parent at least 30% of the year. Each parent's primary-custody amount is multiplied by the share of time the other parent has the children; the parent with the larger figure pays the difference multiplied by 1.5, but never more than the primary-custody amount.

How is health insurance handled in Alaska child support?

The court splits the cost of the children's health insurance equally unless there is good cause to do otherwise. If the paying parent buys the insurance, support is reduced by the other parent's half; if the other parent buys it, support is increased by the paying parent's half.

Is this the amount an Alaska court will order?

No. It is an estimate. The court sets the order under Civil Rule 90.3 and can vary the amount for good cause, for income above $138,000 a year, or where time with each parent does not match what each parent spends on the children.
