Social Security COLA 2027 Estimate Calculator
The 2027 Social Security COLA is determined by CPI-W third-quarter 2026 versus Q3 2025. Recent COLAs: 2026 = 2.8%, 2025 = 2.5%, 2024 = 3.2%, 2023 = 8.7%. SSA announces the final 2027 COLA in mid-October 2026; benefits adjust January 2027.
The Social Security COLA 2027 Estimate Calculator is a free, browser-based tool that turns your current monthly benefit and a projected cost-of-living adjustment into your January 2027 payment. It also subtracts the Medicare Part B premium increase, so you see the net raise rather than the headline one. Updated 2026-09-10.
How the 2027 COLA Is Computed
SSA averages the CPI-W index for July, August and September 2026 and compares it against the same three months of 2025. The difference divided by the 2025 average is the COLA, rounded to the nearest 0.1%. If the result is zero or negative there is no COLA — benefits are never reduced, they simply stay flat, which last happened in 2010, 2011 and 2016. Because the measure only looks at one quarter, inflation earlier in the year does not count: a price spike in February 2026 that has cooled by July never reaches the 2027 COLA at all.
Recent COLAs
2026: 2.8% (announced 24 October 2025, worth about $56/month to the average retiree). 2025: 2.5%. 2024: 3.2%. 2023: 8.7% — the highest since 1981. 2022: 5.9%. 2021: 1.3%. The 10-year average is close to 3.0%, which is why a projection in the 2.5%–3.0% band is the reasonable default when you have no better figure. Source: SSA cost-of-living adjustment history.
How Much of the 2027 COLA Medicare Part B Takes Back
This is the part most COLA calculators leave out, and it is the number that decides whether the raise is real. The standard Medicare Part B premium for 2026 is $202.90 a month, up $17.90 from $185.00 in 2025 — a 9.7% jump against a 2.8% COLA. Because Part B is deducted straight from the benefit, a retiree on $1,900/month who receives a 2.6% COLA gains $49.40 but loses roughly $12 to a 6% Part B increase, keeping about 76% of the raise. Enter your own Part B premium above if you pay an IRMAA-adjusted amount rather than the standard one; higher-income brackets pay considerably more and therefore keep less. The hold-harmless rule caps most beneficiaries' Part B increase at their dollar COLA, so the net raise cannot go negative, but it can be close to zero in a low-COLA year. When Your Higher 2027 Social Security Payment Actually Arrives
The new amount does not land the moment SSA announces it. Retirement and survivor benefits are paid on a Wednesday fixed by your date of birth: the second Wednesday of the month if you were born on the 1st–10th, the third Wednesday for the 11th–20th, and the fourth Wednesday for the 21st–31st. Anyone who started benefits before May 1997, and anyone who also receives SSI, is paid on the 3rd of the month instead. SSI is paid on the 1st, so the increased SSI payment is issued at the end of December 2026 — a day earlier than the retirement increase reaches anyone. Your COLA notice arrives in the my Social Security message centre in early December, before the first higher cheque, so you can check the figure this calculator projected against the real one.
